Publishers post your piece to their site and either pay you up front for it and/or pay you a small royalty each time the piece is viewed either on their site or on a partner site where they’ve posted your piece.

Most publishers and brokers have quality standards and editors who manually review submissions. The level of quality varies greatly among sites.
