I dont' know about this. The kid probably loves the attention. He did something cool and daring now he gets to brag about it every day before and after school. He's probably getting more ass than a toilet seat because of this. Even worse, other dumb dumb kids might look at him as a hero and try to copy.

Great, humiliate the kid. That'll make him respect his parents. How about treating him like the person he is than the mistake he made?

The kid's embarrassment from the punishment did not prevent anyone from getting killed in a drunk driving incident. This is a logical fallacy. I would love to see the current state of the parent child relationship after such an abominable form of punishment. An externally directed parent encouraging the same in her child. Perhaps the parent could demonstrate why his actions were so irresponsible rather than promoting the idea that his actions were wrong because others disapprove of them.

All this did was multiply the kid's resentment of his parent ten-fold.

This is terrible parenting. A good parent would have taught his or her child not to drive that fast in the first place. He wouldn't need to be punished like this if his parents were even close to being good parents.

It's clever, but incredibly stupid. Punishment isn't terribly effective. A better solution would have been to work out the childs punishment. Clearly, he deserves some kind of punishment, but merely punishment without education will only result the kid repeating his offenses, or worse yet, not getting caught (and when he does, not telling his parents).

Some form of punishment and education complex would be better. Punish the kid, but talk to him and discuss why he is being punished, what he could do better, and the like. Embarrassment on this scale isn't all that great, unless the kid is on board with the punishment.

I agree with Belle and to further it, I don't think those of you who think this is so harsh or humiliating would agree had he instead killed one of your children. Great job to the mom and I think this young man will think twice about speeding, or any other reckless action, in the future.

Oh, but how "EMBARRASSING" would it have been if he'd HIT AND KILLED someone? I know a girl that ran a stoplight and hit a girl her age, and the girl she hit died. She walked away with barely a scratch. You want to talk embarrassment? This is going to follow her for the rest of her life. I'm sure she'd be on the curb with that sign in a heartbeat if it meant the other girl would still be alive.

Maybe public humiliation isn't the right punishment for a kid caught in the car without a seatbelt or in the basement downing a beer, but I believe that the punishment here is a great fit for the crime.
