Tools of the Trade: Web Editors

If you’re going to have your own web page/site chances are you will need a web editor. Unless you want to use the builder included in your hosing package, which can often be limiting.

I use DreamWeaver, but it’s pretty expensive. Back when I started there weren’t any other good options and I’ve just stuck with it – probably because I’m used to it and it’s comfortable. Now there are plenty of other options and if I was starting from scratch I’d surely pick one of the free ones.

  • SeaMonkey - (free) is a Mozilla project that’s an all-in-one internet suite combining a browser, e-mail, IRC, and an HTML editor in one package. Might be better for more advanced users.
  • Nvu – (free) kinda reminds me of FrontPage meets DreamWeaver. I’ve used it myself and found it very likable.
  • KompoZer – (free) claims to be an unofficial bug-fixed version of Nvu. Not sure of the backstory there, so I’ve included both for you.
  • WebPage – (free) by Trellian.

My advice with any software is to look for one with a strong user-community which means more support and ultimately find the one that is most comfortable for you to use.
